SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A pair of first-time honorees were chosen as this week’s TicketSmarter #SummitMSOC Players of the Week. Kansas City forward Jony Munoz collected his first career offensive weekly honor, while St. Thomas goalkeeper Niklas Martensson earned the defensive accolade, league officials announced Monday.
Munoz returned from a six-match absence to score the game-winning goal just before halftime in the Roos’ 1-0 victory over Western Illinois. The sophomore finished with a match-high four shots on goal, while also sending one off the cross bar and one off a post as the Roos picked up a crucial three points in their pursuit of a Men’s Soccer Championship berth.
The Tommies had come close on several occasions but were finally able to breakthrough and secure their first Division I victory with a 1-0 triumph over preseason league favorite Omaha. Martennson’s play between the pipes was a big reason for that as he finished the match with eight saves in a match that saw the Mavericks take 19 total shots. He earned his second shutout of the season for his efforts.
