#SummitWSOC Weekly Notebook: No. 11

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Summit League women’s soccer regular season ends on Sunday following a weekend full of games. Denver and South Dakota State have both secured a spot in the four-team tournament Nov. 4 and 6 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

South Dakota, Omaha, Kansas City and Western Illinois will look to earn a trip to Denver next week and it’s going to be an exciting weekend to determine seeds and the final two spots. The action begins with the Leathernecks hosting North Dakota State on Friday at 3 p.m. CT.

Around The League
• Two spots remain up for grabs in the four-team field for next week’s 2021 #SummitWSOC Championship as The Summit League regular season comes to a close this weekend.
• All four seeds will also be determined based upon what happens this weekend.
• Denver (7-0-0; 21 pts) and South Dakota State (5-1-1; 15 points) clinched a spot in the Summit League Tournament and we will see the final two teams clinch a spot come Sunday.
• If the Pioneers record one win this weekend against South Dakota on Friday or South SDSU on Sunday, they will capture their fourth-straight regular season title and sixth overall.
• The Pioneers capped their regular season road tilt with a pair of shutout victories against North Dakota, 6-0, and North Dakota State, 4-0.
• DU junior midfielder Kaitlyn Glover was selected as the TicketSmarter Summit League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, where she netted the program’s first hat trick since 2012 and had two assists on the weekend.
• Teammate Sydney Sharp recorded the game-winning goal against UND and it was her seventh-straight game where she scored a goal.
• Sharp currently leads The Summit League in goals (7) and game-winning goals (5) and points (16) in league play.
• In their regular season home finale, South Dakota defeated SDSU 2-1 on Sunday for the first time since 2016 and with the win, they recorded its Division I era best 10th win of the season.
• The Coyotes sit tied for third place in the league standings with Omaha at 15 points apiece.
• USD senior forward Jordan Centineo scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 left in the match off a corner kick from Abby Ostrem where the first attempt was missed, but the ball found Centineo and stepped into a shot that deflected off the Jacks defenders and went in.
• The Mavericks ended its regular season road swing by blanking NDSU, 4-0, and UND, 1-0.
• Omaha senior goalkeeper Rachel Thigpen received the TicketSmarter Summit League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week nod after recording back-to-back shutouts on the weekend, totaling five saves.
• UNO sophomore forward Sophia Green is on a two-game scoring streak after netting one at NDSU and UND. At UND, she netted the golden goal in the 102nd-minute, marking her third game winner of the season.
• The Mavericks will close out their regular season with two home games against SDSU on Friday and USD on Sunday.
• Western Illinois kept its season alive by completing a weekend sweep against Kansas City (1-0) and Oral Roberts (2-1).
• Senior midfielder Jenna Lundgren notched the game winner in the 51st-minute against the Roos, while Angie Knies scored the crucial game-winning goal in the 25th-minute against the Golden Eagles.
• Kansas City went 1-1 on the weekend, falling to Western Illinois, 1-0, and beating St. Thomas, 2-1. Against the Tommies, the Roos got goals from senior forward Kassi Ginther in the 18th-minute of action and sealed the game from junior midfielder Morgan McLaughlin in the 80th-minute.
• The Roos’ lone match of the weekend will be against Oral Roberts on Sunday and will have to wait and see how South Dakota and Omaha fare on Friday for a shot at the league tournament.
• Denver senior forward Natalie Beckman’s 15 assists thus far is the most in a single season in league history, breaking her own record set last season at 14.
• Beckman sits second in the NCAA in total assists with 15 and her 10 assists in league play being six assists higher than the next closest student-athlete.
• Denver remains ranked No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches West Region Top 10 poll.
