Oral Roberts and Denver claim weekly accolades

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Oral Roberts forward Dante Brigida and Denver defenseman Jake Mecham were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, league officials announced Tuesday.

Brigida’s first offensive honor of the season came on the heels of a three-goal performance in Oral Roberts’ series sweep against Eastern Illinois. The Edmond, Okla., native scored both goals in the first match against the Panthers, including his fourth-career brace in the 89th minute. In game two, Brigida scored the equalizer in the 77th minute and assisted on the game-winning goal in double overtime. In all, Brigida totaled 14 shots with 10 being on goal.

Mecham assisted on the game-winning goal in Denver 2-1 win against Western Illinois in game one. The first match of the week saw Pioneers hold WIU to one shot on goal, which is the 54th time in the program’s Division I history that a Denver defense held an opponent to one shot on goal or less. The Las Vegas, Nev., native also drew the penalty which resulted in the Pioneers’ first goal of the match in game two. Mecham led a defense that heled the Leathernecks to just three shots on goal the entire weekend.
