MATTHEWS, N.C. – The University of Denver women's soccer team fell to second-seeded North Carolina 2-0 on Friday afternoon at the Sportsplex.
North Carolina got on the board in the 41
st minute. A free kick from 40 yards out was headed straight up into the air by Rachael Dorwart. Abby Allen out-jumped
Nerea Arrazola and headed home the breakthrough.
Both teams put two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, including attempts on target from Denver's
Natalie Beckman and
Meg Halvorson.
The Tar Heels made it 2-0 in the 70
th minute through a goal from Dorwart. A free kick from the midfield line was headed at one point by both teams, but the ball fell into the box to Dorwart who smashed her attempt into the roof of the net to double North Carolina's advantage.
North Carolina continued on the front foot after its second goal, outshooting the Pioneers 12-3 in the half and 17-6 for the match. The Tar Heels also took eight of the 10 corners in the 90 minutes.

- Denver is now 4-12-0 in NCAA Tournament matches.
- The Pioneers played in the second round for the third time in their program history on Friday.
- The match marked just the second time Denver had been shutout in 21 matches this season (season opener at Colorado).
