Top-seeded SDSU outlasts fourth-seeded USD 5-3

VERMILLION, S.D. – An SDSU grand slam in the fourth inning from sophomore centerfielder Jocelyn Carrillo was the difference maker as the top-seeded Jackrabbits advanced to the winner’s bracket round of the 2022 #SummitSB Championship with a 5-3 victory against fourth-seeded South Dakota on Saturday morning at Nygaard Field in Vermillion, S.D.

The first inning was a pitcher’s duel, as USD senior Grace Garcia and South Dakota State sophomore Grace Glanzer each retired the first three batters in order. In inning two, all-league first teamer Jordyn Pender belted her fifth home run of the season to give USD a 1-0 lead. Additionally, Garcia struck out the side in the second inning and the momentum looked as though it would be in favor of the Coyotes.

In the third inning, SDSU catcher Brooke Dumont reached first on a fielding error at third, followed by the Jackrabbits’ first hit of the contest off a bunt single from leftfielder Peyton Daugherty. With runners on first and second and two outs, Garcia was able to escape the jam with a groundout to third.

After SDSU’s first two batters in the bottom of the fourth inning posted singles to right and left field, respectively, Cheyanne Masterson would walk to load the bases, leaving Lindsey Culver at the plate. The sophomore infielder recorded an RBI via a hit by pitch to tie it up 1-1. After back-to-back force outs at home, all-leaguer Jocelyn Carrillo scorched a go-ahead grand slam to right centerfield to give SDSU a 5-1 lead and leave it up to Glanzer to do the rest in the circle.

South Dakota made things interesting in the top of the sixth inning, as the Coyotes put runners on second and third with one out. Gabby Moser would come through and post a two-run double to left field and make it a two-run contest. With runners at the corners and two outs, Glanzer picked up a clutch strikeout to end the frame and strand the tying runs.

Glanzer retired the Coyotes to end the game for her team-leading 20th win of the season. The Sioux Falls, S.D., nativde allowed three earned runs on with one walk and seven strikeouts, while Garcia was saddled with the loss and recorded four strikeouts and gave up six hits.
