ORLANDO -- No. 5 seed Duke jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never trailed as the Blue Devils defeated No. 12 seed Oral Roberts 74-51 in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Thursday at the Amway Center. The Golden Eagles, who became just the second Summit League team to win 30 games in a season, saw their 17-game winning streak snapped by the ACC Tournament Champions.
It took just over eight minutes for the nation's third-ranked scoring offense to make a basket when DeShang Weaver broke the scoreless drought with a driving layup. The Golden Eagles could never get on track in this one as Duke's defensive limited them to just nine field goals in the opening 20 minutes.
Senior Max Abmas scored five of his team-high 12 points in the closing minute of the opening half, but the Blue Devils used that opening 15-point spurt to help build a 40-23 hafltime advantage.
Duke would quickly push that lead to its peak at 50-23 after scoring the first 10 points of the second half. The Golden Eagles did trim their defiict down to 14 after an Issac McBride triple with just under nine minutes to play, but the Blue Devils would not let ORU get any closer.
Abmas was the lone Golden Eagle to reach double figures as a team that came in averaging more than 11 3-pointers per contest hit just 8-of-32 attempts from beyond the arc.
Jeremy Roach led Duke with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, while Dariq Whitehead added 13 off the bench for the Blue Devils, who shot 46.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded ORU 46-32.
