No. 2 Omaha outlasts No. 3 North Dakota State 5-1

BROOKINGS, S.D. – A complete-game, two-hit performance for All-League first team pitcher Kamryn Meyer was the difference maker as the second-seeded Mavericks of Omaha advanced to the winner’s bracket round of the 2023 #SummitSB Championship with a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded North Dakota State on Friday afternoon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium in Brookings, S.D.

In Omaha’s first at-bat, Lynsey Tucker got things started with a single through the left side, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI-single from Rachel Weber. That staked Meyer to an early 1-0 lead as she dominated from the start holding the Bison hitless through the first six innings to pick up her 15th win of the season.

Meyer, who had nine strikeouts, allowed her first base runner in the third inning on a fielding error, then hit a batter, but the senior was able to get out of that frame unscathed by striking out Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage.

NDSU starter Paige Vargas held the Mavericks off the scoreboard after that initial run in the first until Omaha's offense put the game away with a four-spot in the sixth. Ava Rongisch plated the first run by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Vargas was able to get the second out on a force play at home, but junior Olivia Aden delivered the a bases-clearing, two-out double to put the Mavericks ahead 5-0.

After a leadoff walk, the Bison broke up Meyer’s no-hit bid in the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out, but Meyer was able to limit the damage, surrendering just one run on a sacrifce fly by Zoe King.
