BROOKINGS, S.D. – Top-seeded South Dakota State eliminated No. 3 North Dakota State with a 10-2 run-rule victory in game five of the 2023 #SummitSB Championship. After falling in their opener, the Jackrabbits responded by dispatching the Bison in five innings to keep their hopes alive of a tournament three-peat.
SDSU opened the scoring in the top of the second, pushing a run across after drawing a pair of walks. Chloe Woldruff provided the run-scoring hit, singling through the right side to put the Jackrabbits ahead 1-0.
NDSU would get that run back in its half of the second after Emma Osmundson notched a leadoff double and came around to score on a RBI-single from Alli Boyle.
From there, it was all SDSU. The Jackrabbits broke the game open with five runs in their half of the third off NDSU starter Laine Lyle. Mia Jarecki got the action started with a single through the left side and Allison Yoder moved her to second thanks to an infield single. Rozelyn Carrillo loaded the bases with the Jacks' third straight single, setting up Jocelyn Carrillo with a prime opportunity to do damage.
On the first pitch she saw, Jocelyn Carrillo ripped a two-run single to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error. Osmundson pushed Carrillo across on a sacrifice fly then Alexa Williams capped the scoring with a two-run homer to centerfield.
The Bison led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles, however, Jackrabbit starter Shannon Lasey was able to induce a double play before Rozelyn Carrillo ended the inning with a superb diving snag at shortstop and throwing the runner out at first from her knees.
SDSU catcher Brooke Dumont led off the fourth with a solo home run, which ended Lyle's day in the circle after extending SDSU's lead to 7-1. After NDSU reliever Savy Williams walked the bases loaded, Lindsey Culver brought home two more runs to push the advantage to 9-1.
NDSU loaded the bases in its half of the fourth, but Rozelyn Carrillo came up with another defensive gem making a diving snag and scooping the ball to Jarecki at second base to end the inning.
The Jackrabbits would bring home an insurance in the fifth on an RBI-single by Yoder to right field. The Bison needed at least two runs to extend the game, but could only mang Lasey was able to close it out for the 10-2 run rule victory.
