Second-seeded Omaha advances to fourth straight title game

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Omaha’s Sydney Nuismer tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the second-seeded Mavericks into the title game of the 2024 Summit League Softball Championship. The Mavericks blanked the Roos, 2-0, in an elimination game Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium to set up a matchup of the top two seeds in Saturday's championship game.

Kansas City loaded the bases in the first inning but were unable to push any runs across after Nuismer struck out Derika Castillo to end the early threat.

Omaha also threatened in its half of the first, but the Mavericks were able to come through and produce all the runs Nuismer would need. Lynsey Tucker and Maggie O’Brien reached base on back-to-back singles and came across to score on a two-out, two-run double by veteran catcher Sydney Ross.

The Roos had two more runners on in the second with two outs but Nuismer was able to get Kadin Vire to ground out to first to end another threat by Kansas City.

Kansas City would record a pair of singles for the third time in the game during the fourth, but once again Nusimer escaped. This time the righthander induced a foul out and a ground out to keep Omaha in the lead 2-0.

The Roos would outhit the Mavericks 9-6 in the contest and leave 10 on-base as Nuismer and her defense kept Kansas City off the scoreboard.

KC's Camryn Stickel only allowed three hits after the first inning to keep the Roos within striking distance.
