SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Denver forward Keegan Kelly and Kansas City forward Elie Kisoka shared the opening Summit League Men’s Soccer Offensive Peak Performer of the Week award, while DU defender Ian Smith nabbed the defensive accolade, league officials announced Monday.
Both Kelly and Kisoka were making their debuts for their respective teams and did so in emphatic fashion.
Kelly opened DU’s scoring in a 2-1 road win at Cal in the opener with a header in the 25
th minute and provided the lone goal in the Pioneers’ 1-0 upset of (5/4) Stanford. The Auckland, New Zealand native buried a long-range shot in the 49
th minute as DU took down a top-five team for the fourth time in program history and first since 2018.
Kelly is the first Pio since Smith in 2022 to score a goal in his first two collegiate matches.
Kisoka’s debut was equally as impressive as he contributed to all three goals for the Roos as they opened the campaign on the road with a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s and 2-2 draw with San Francisco.
The Marseille, France native scored both of his goals in the final stretches of those two matches. His first collegiate goal came from some 30 yards out as he beat the St. Mary’s goalkeeper on a long-range shot to give the Roos a season-opening triumph.
Against the Dons, Kisoka helped KC erase a 2-0 deficit in the final 20 minutes by setting up the first goal, then scoring the equalizer on a header in the 84
th minute.
Smith played all 180 minutes in DU’s two wins over Atlantic Coast Conference foes, helping a defensive unit surrender just one goal and four shots on target. Smith scored the game-winning goal for the Pios in the 54
th minute against Cal and led a defensive unit that did give up a shot on goal to Stanford in the final 71 minutes of that contest.
