SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- We are just a week into the Summit League men's basketball schedule and the four remaining unbeaten teams are all squaring off Wednesday night in a pair of 8 p.m. CT tips.
St. Thomas, who won a pair of road games to open its Summit slate, will return home to face a South Dakota State squad that took care of its only action in the opening week, earning a 91-70 home win over Denver. The Tommies and Jacks' clash will air linearly on FOX9 in Minnesota and be streamed live on the Summit League Network. After its two road triumphs, St. Thomas boasts a league-best 12 overall wins on the campaign.
Kansas City, who was the only Summit team to win both of its home games during the opening week, will travel to Omaha to face the Mavericks in a nationally-televised game on CBSSN. The Roos cruised to wins over South Dakota and Oral Roberts, posting a scoring margin of +17.5 in those two victories, while limiting their opponents to just 60.5 ppg.
The Mavericks, who were picked eighth in the presason poll, were the surprise of the opening week, posting road wins at North Dakota and North Dakota State to push their overall winning streak to a season-best four straight. The four-game winning streak is also the longest for Omaha under the direction of third-year head coach Chris Crutchfield.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
• For the first time in its Division I history, St. Thomas was ranked in the Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Poll, earning the No. 25 spot after back-to-back road wins to open Summit play.
• The Tommies’ 12 overall wins are the most by any Summit squad as they return home to play SDSU and South Dakota this week in Schoenecker Arena.
• Junior guard Miles Barnstable, a Division III transfer from UW-Whitewater, averaged 25.0 ppg in wins at NDSU and North Dakota last week to earn the Tommies’ first weekly peak performer nod of the season.
• Kansas City has rattled off six straight victories after starting the season 4-7. The Roos are the only the Summit team holding teams below 70.0 ppg and limited South Dakota (54) and Oral Roberts (67) to below that clip to open league play 2-0.
• SDSU’s Oscar Cluff posted career-highs with 30 points and 19 rebounds in a 21-point win over Denver. He earned his third weekly peak performer honor of the season as well as his first Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Week.
• Cluff ranks second nationally in rebounding (11.7/g), tied for second in double-doubles (10) and sits third in field goal percentage (69.4).
• Omaha’s Marquel Sutton became the fourth active Summit player to surpass the 1,000-career point plateau last week. After scoring a season-high 27 in their opening-night win at North Dakota, the senior added 16 to hit the milestone in a win at NDSU to help the Mavericks start 2-0 in #SummitMBB play.
• Sutton is averaging 21.8 ppg over his last four tilts.
• Maverick guard Lance Waddles came off the bench against his former team to drop a season-high 24 points at NDSU, which included a 5-for-5 stretch from distance over a two-minute span in the second half to lead UNO’s comeback.
• After being held to a season-low 54 points in a loss at Kansas City, South Dakota put up 91 in a seven-point home win over Denver. It was the sixth time USD score 90-plus in a game this season.
• The Coyotes went the foul stripe 51 times (32 makes) against the Pioneers, which was tied for fourth most by a team in a Summit regular season tilt. It was the most free throw attempts since Oral Roberts tried 50 against Centenary in 2006.
• Denver’s Nicholas Shogbonyo and Sebastian Akins both reached double figures in back-to-back Summit road losses. Shogbonyo scored a team-high 18 in the loss at SDSU and averaged 15.5 ppg in those two games, while Akins averaged 14.5 ppg off the bench for the Pios.
• North Dakota put up 80-plus to open Summit action at home but came up empty in the win column. Sophomore transfer Mier Panoam scored a career-high 24 points vs. Omaha and added another team-high of 20 vs. St. Thomas. It was the first back-to-back, 20-plus point games for the Fighting Hawk newcomer.
• Oral Roberts’ Jackson Skipper made his first two career starts for the Golden Eagles last week, averaging 17.0 ppg. The Vermont transfer tallied 20 in a win over Texas A&M-Texarkana, then added a team-high 14 in ORU’s Summit opener at Kansas City. Those were the first two double-digit scoring games for Skipper as well.
• North Dakota State dropped a pair of home tilts to open Summit play. Senior Jacksen Moni continued his torrid scoring stretch, posting team-highs with 25 against St. Thomas and adding 23 against Omaha. Moni has now scored 20-plus in seven of NDSU’s last nine games (23.8 ppg).
• The Bison lead the country in 3-pointers made per game at 12.3/g. NDSU hit 13 in each Summit clash and have made 10-plus in 10 of their last 11 games.
