UNO’s Rongisch, UND’s Carr, claim season-opening Kwik Star #SummitSB weekly accolades

First weekly honors secured by Fighting Hawks and Mavericks

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha outfielder Ava Rongisch and North Dakota lefthander Makaela Carr were named the season’s first Kwik Star Summit League Softball Peak Performer and Pitcher of the Week following the opening weekend of the college softball season, League officials announced Monday.

Rongisch led the Mavericks to a 4-1 ledger at the UNI Dome Tournament where the junior delivered five extra-base hits, including a league-best trio of homers as she hit safely in the opening four games of the weekend.

In the season-opening 10-0 win against Loyola-Chicago, Rongisch extended the Mavericks' lead to 6-0 with a two-run single in the fourth and capped the scoring with a fielder's choice RBI in the seventh. This was her first of three-straight contests with three RBI as she finished the tournament with 11.

Rongisch homered in Omaha's next three contests, including a three-run blast in the second meeting with Loyola Chicago (12-4) that broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth. The Mavericks would go onto to win that contest 12-4.

The Omaha native delivered her fourth conescutive multi-RBI effort in a 7-1 win over Drake when she capped the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth. She finished the five-game stretch with a .438 batting average and a 1.125 slugging percentage.

Carr helped the Fighting Hawks notch two wins at the UNI Dome Tournament as the senior struck out 17 batters over 15 innings while allowing just three earned runs over three appearances. After allowing just one earned run and striking out nine in a 1-0 loss to Northern Iowa, the Fighting Hawk senior earned a save in a 3-0 win over the Panthers in her next outing.

The Smithville, Mo., native closed out the weekend with an eight-inning, complete-game performance against Drake to earn her first win of the season. She scattered six hits, allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven Bulldogs in UND's 6-4 win.
