SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha outfielder Sammy Schmidt and righthander Maddia Groff swept the Kwik Star Summit League Softball Peak Performer and Pitcher of the Week honors, League officials announced Monday. The honors for the sophomore duo are the first of their respective careers.
Schmidt batted .533 (8-for-15) with three multi-hit games and had at least one RBI in all four of her starts for the Mavericks, who went 5-0 at the FGCU Invitational.
In her first action of the tournament, Schmidt delivered a walk-off single through the right side to lead the Mavericks to a 6-5 win over Seton Hall in 10 innings. She finished the contest with a career-high three hits and also scored twice.
In the Mavericks' second tilt with Seton Hall, Schmidt pulled the Mavericks even at 1-1 with a RBI-single in the second and pushed Omaha's lead to 3-1 in the sixth with another run-scoring single.
Schmidt capped the scoring in Omaha's initial win over FGCU with a sacrifice fly in an 8-2 triumph and then added three more hits and another RBI in a 5-0 win over the Eagles to help finish off a perfect weekend for the Mavericks.
Groff was dominant in all three of her outings in the circle, striking out 27 over 17 scoreless innings. The Maverick newcomer started against Wisconsin, allowing three hits and striking out 12 in a 7-0 blanking of the Big Ten-foe.
Later that day, the Omaha native entered the circle in relief, tossing three more scoreless frames in the extra-inning win over the Pirates.
She closed out the tournament with her second shutout, as she scattered six hits over seven innings, while striking out 11 Eagles as she earned her third win of the weekend.
