OMAHA, Neb. - No. 15 seed Omaha men's basketball's first-ever matchup in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament is set as the Mavericks (22-12, 13-3 Summit) will take-on BIG EAST regular season and tournament champion St. John's (30-4, 18-2 BIG EAST), who are the No. 2 seed. Omaha's March Madness debut will come on Thursday, March 20 in Providence, R.I. at the Amica Mutual Pavilion as part of the West region.
The Mavericks, who won both the Summit League regular season and tournament championships for the first time in program history, are 1-1 against current BIG EAST members in regular season play (Division I era). Omaha will be the League's ninth No. 15 seed in tournament history with Oral Roberts advancing to the Sweet 16 from that position in 2021. The Golden Eagles were the third Summit program to reach the Sweet 16 joining Cleveland State (No. 14; 1986) and Valparaiso (No. 13; 1998).
Tip-off time and television network will be announced by the NCAA and its broadcast partners in the coming hours.
On the other side of the pod are No. 7 seed Kansas and No. 10 seed Arkansas, the winner of which the Mavericks or Red Storm would face on Saturday, March 22 in the second round of the tournament.
