SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – North Dakota designated player Callie Honig and St. Thomas righthander Ava Kleinfeldt claimed the latest Kwik Star Summit League Softball Peak Performer and Pitcher of the Week honors, League officials announced Monday. Both players earned the first weekly honors of their respective careers.
Honig hit .500 during a 4-1 week for the Fighting Hawks, which included a doubleheader sweep over Jamestown and a series win over North Dakota State. Against the Bison, the Fighting Hawk senior went 6-for-10 and delivered game-winning hits in each of UND's two victories.
In the first game of the NDSU series, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native went 2-for-3 and her solo home run in the second inning provided the only scoring in the Fighting Hawks' 1-0 win. In the game three rubber match, Honig opened the scoring with an RBI-double in the first, then delivered a two-run, tiebreaking single in the eighth in a game UND would win 5-3 to clinch the series.
Kleinfeldt played a key role in St. Thomas' historic series win over South Dakota State, registering complete-game victories in games one and three to lead the Tommies their program's first win and subsequent series win over the Jackrabbits.
In the opener, the Lake Mills, Wis., native scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings to secure her second shutout in Summit play. In the 6-2 series-clinching win, the Tommie freshman continued to dominate in the circle, finishing her second complete game of the weekend after surrendering two runs on eight hits to the Jacks.
