SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota State third basemen Abby Gentry and Omaha lefthander Maddia Groff claimed the latest Kwik Star Summit League Softball Peak Performer and Pitcher of the Week honors, League officials announced Monday. Groff secured her fifth weekly accolade of the season, while Gentry garnered the first of her career.
Gentry hit .778 during a series sweep of North Dakota State, finishing 7-for-9 and nine RBI as she drove in three runs in each of SDSU's victories.
In the first game of the NDSU series, the Benton, Ark., native went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first and two-run homer in the fifth as SDSU cruised to a 10-0 victory.
In game two, Gentry went 3-for-3 and provided all the scoring for the Jacks in the 3-2 series-clinching win over the Bison. She opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, then delivered the game-winning knock with a two-run triple in the third that broke a 1-1 tie.
She closed out the series by going 2-for-3 with another trio of RBI in the Jacks' 12-3 win. She provided the game-winning hit in this one as well as her two-run, second-inning double broke a 3-3 tie.
Groff played a key role in Omaha’s series sweep of South Dakota, registering complete-game victories in games one and three and securing a third win as a reliever in game two. With 22 strikeouts in the series, she now ranks ninth nationally in that category with 177.
In the opener, the Omaha, Neb., native scattered three hits, allowed one run and fanned six in a 9-1 victory over the Coyotes. In the series-clinching win in game two, the Maverick sophomore threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck out five as Omaha rallied for a 6-5 victory.
In the finale, Groff posted her sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season, registering 11 as she picked up her 20th win of the season. She scattered five hits and one run as the Mavericks sealed the sweep of the Coyotes with a 2-1 triumph.
