SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Oral Roberts wrapped up its 22
nd regular season title last weekend, while Omaha secured a postseason berth by taking two of three from the Golden Eagles in a series between the top two teams. Those results left two spots open in the four-team Summit League Baseball Championship field with Northern Colorado and South Dakota State in the best position to snag those heading into the final week of play.
The Golden Eagles will be the No. 1 seed as they did cement the outright regular season title and right to host the 2027 Championship next season. The Mavericks, who were the first team to take a three-game Summit League series from ORU this season, control their own destiny to be the No. 2 seed, but could also land on the remaining two seed lines depending on what transpires across the league.
Omaha plays host to South Dakota State in a four-game series starting Wednesday. The Jackrabbits, who are currently in fourth place, need to take just one game from the Mavericks to punch their postseason ticket. Northern Colorado is in the same boat, needing just one win against the regular season champions, to return to postseason play as ORU travels to Greeley for a three-game set.
Defending tournament champion North Dakota State is still alive but needs to win all four games at St. Thomas and have either SDSU or Northern Colorado go winless in their respective series. The Bison and Tommies start their four-game series with a Thursday doubleheader.
All three series will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
• Oral Roberts wrapped up its 22nd Summit League regular season title with a 4-3 victory in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at home vs. Omaha. The Golden Eagles won the outright title after sharing 2025 with St. Thomas. Cooper Kelly drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to provide the decisive run and Jack Hill finished things out with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief as he improved to 6-0 on the campaign.
• Centerfielder Makani Tanaka belted his seventh home run of league play in the fifth to put ORU up 3-2. He enters the final week of Summit action with a .312 batting average, those seven homers, 26 RBI and a .950 OPS in conference play.
• Omaha would take the next two from the Golden Eagles to secure its berth in the postseason tournament and become the first team to a win a three-game series against the regular season champions this season. • The Mavericks improved to 13-10 with a four-game series against South Dakota State on tap starting Wednesday. The Jackrabbits will be the home team for the first game that will feature four consecutive 6 p.m. starts to close out the regular season at Tal Anderson Field in Omaha.
• Omaha split Saturday’s doubleheader, evening the series with a 7-5 comeback victory in game two. Brody Sexton put the Mavericks in front 6-5 with a two-run homer in the eighth and Jackson Trout added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth. Sexton’s homer was his first since opening day at Arizona State.
• Trout homered for the seventh time in league play, going 3-for-4 in the finale vs. the Golden Eagles to lift the Mavericks to an 8-6 series-clinching victory. It was his eighth three-hit game of the season.
• Trout heads into the Mavericks’ four-game series with South Dakota State leading all Summit League players with a .376 batting average and carrying an eight-game hitting streak.
• Northern Colorado took the opener and the finale to win its series at North Dakota State and improve to 12-13 in Summit play. The Bears can clinch a postseason spot with one win over regular season champion ORU this week or a North Dakota State in its four-game series at St. Thomas.
• Catcher Sam Pease batted .600 against the Bison and earned his first career Kwik Star weekly honor. He increased his batting average to .410 in 18 Summit League starts with his production at the plate against NDSU. Pease scored five runs and drove in six during the series, including capping the 9-7 victory in the finale with a career-high four RBI.
• SDSU also strengthened its postseason candidacy by taking two of three from St. Thomas, winning a slugfest 16-13 in game one before earning a 7-4 victory in the rubber match. The Jacks need just one win in their four-game series at Omaha or a North Dakota State loss to clinch a spot in next week’s postseason.
• In game one, St. Thomas roared ahead 11-3 with a six-run fifth inning only to see the Jackrabbits tally eight in their half of the inning to level the game. Both teams had 17 hits in the contest with Luke Luskey’s two-run single in the seventh being the biggest of them all.
• Luskey went 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI in the contest and has six total on the weekend to push his league-leading total to 30. The Jacks’ designated hitter is now batting .360 with six homers heading into the final series with Omaha.
• Nolan Grawe went 6-for-11 with five RBI in the two wins over the Tommies. His two-run double in the sixth inning during the finale broke a 3-3 tie, allowing the Jackrabbit bullpen to preserve the win as Ty Madison and Tristan Augdahl allowed just one earned run over the final five frames.
• St. Thomas freshman Owen Marsolek led the Tommies to victory in game two, tossing a season-best 7.2 innings and striking out a career-high 12 Jackrabbits. He earned his first career Kwik Star weekly pitching honor for his efforts.
• The Tommies will host North Dakota State in a four-game series in St. Paul where the Bison will be the home team in Friday’s opening game of a doubleheader.
• NDSU needs to sweep the Tommies and have either Omaha sweep SDSU or Oral Roberts sweep Northern Colorado to qualify for the postseason. The Bison are the defending Summit League Tournament champions after winning it all in Omaha in 2025.
