OMAHA, Neb. – The 2020 Summit League individual women’s soccer awards were spread out among three different teams as those honors along with the all-league and all-newcomer teams were announced Wednesday by league officials.
Denver’s Natalie Beckman was named the Offensive Player of the Year as she led the Pioneers to a share of the program’s third straight regular season crown.
South Dakota State’s Gabby Vivier-Hannay was named the Defensive Player of the Year. She anchored a Jackrabbits’ defensive unit that surrendered a league-low five goals in 16 matches.
The leader of the Jacks, Brock Thompson, was named the Coach of the Year for the second time of his career. SDSU finished the campaign 12-0-4 and went unbeaten in league play for the third time in program history.
A pair of Omaha freshmen nabbed the final two individual awards marking the first time in program history a Maverick has earned an individual honor. Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen was named the Goalkeeper of the Year while classmate Sophia Green was named Newcomer of the Year.
That duo helped the Mavericks to eight wins with Reedtz Rehde Olesen ranking among the top two keepers in goals against average (0.57) and shutouts (6), while Green was Omaha’s top goal scorer with six during the regular season.
All three of those teams will be part of the field at the 2020 Women’s Soccer Championship presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare that begins Thursday in Omaha. Top-seeded Denver will take on fourth-seeded South Dakota in the opening semifinal at 2 p.m. CT while second-seeded South Dakota State will take on the host and third-seeded Mavericks at 5 p.m. CT.
Not surprisingly, the league leader in goals, assists and points earned the top offensive accolade. Beckman’s season saw her register double-digit goals (10) and assists (12) to finish with 32 points in 17 matches.
DU’s junior forward also earned a first team nod for the second straight year and has earned all-league accolades after all three of her collegiate seasons. She was joined on the first team by Vivier-Hannay and Reedtz Rehde Olesen, while Green landed on the second team.
Beckman was one of a league-high four Pioneers on the first team as she was joined by midfielder Sami Feller, who earned her third consecutive first team honor, forward Meg Halvorson, who has three all-league honors to her credit, and senior defender Taylor Parker, who has a pair of first-team nods to go with two more second team honors amassed during her career.
Vivier-Hannay was one of three Jacks on the first team as both her and Maya Hansen were second-team honorees in 2019. Midfielder Eden Brooker rounded out the Jackrabbit trio on the first team.
Reedtz Rehde Olesen and defender Margaret Lavigne were the two Mavericks awarded first-team spots. Lavigne was an all-league second team performer in 2019. Western Illinois forward Amy Andrews and South Dakota midfielder Alexis Mitchell, who both had seven goals to tie for second in the league in that category, filled out the final first-team spots. Mitchell’s all-league nod is the second of her career.
Denver and South Dakota shared the league-high with three representatives on the second team. The three Pioneers all earned their first all-league accolades and that group includes midfielders Kaitlyn Glover and Brittney Lewis along with defender Devan McSwain.
The three Coyotes on the second team were forward Taylor Cotter, goalkeeper Emily Harkleroad and defender Taylor Ravelo. Omaha’s Green was joined on the second squad by Mavericks’ midfielder Grace Ostergaard, while SDSU also had a pair of second-teamers. That duo include defender Rachel Preston and forward Kayla Wisniewski.
Kansas City’s Emma Wilson rounded out the second team and was the lone Roo to earn all-league accolades after scoring seven goals in the program’s first year back in the league.
Omaha’s Green, Ostergaard and Reedtz Rehde Olesen along with South Dakota’s Ravelo all doubled-up their accolades by also being named to the all-newcomer team. The Maverick trio was joined by teammates Jordyn West and Regan Zimmers to give that program a league-high five members on the squad.
North Dakota State’s Jess Hanley and Olivia Lovick gave the Bison a pair on the all-newcomer team, while Denver and South Dakota State each had one. The Pios were represented by defender Chaynee Kingsbury and South Dakota State midfielder Kaycee Manding represented the Jackrabbits.
