Pioneer men selected to repeat as #SummitGF champs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –Denver was selected by The Summit League's head coaches to capture the men’s #SummitGF title after hoisting the last two championship trophies. Summit League officials released its 2022 Men's Golf Preseason Poll and Golfers to Watch list Thursday.

The Pioneers, who will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Luke Goulding, won the 2021 league title by eight strokes over Oral Roberts. DU received all nine first-place votes that it could while Kansas City picked up the remaining one.

North Dakota State finished second with 65 points, while the next trio of Oral Roberts, Kansas City and South Dakota State was separated by just one point. The Golden Eagles took third with 58 points and the Roos and Jackrabbits shared fourth with 57 points a piece.

South Dakota was sixth with 35 points, Omaha was seventh with 32 points and North Dakota took eighth with 28 points. Newcomer St. Thomas was ninth with 26 points, while Western Illinois rounded out the poll in tenth with 11 points.

The 2022 Championship returns to Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kan., for the sixth time and will be competed May 1-3.

#SummitMGF Preseason Notes
  • The 2021 Summit League Championship gave Denver back-to-back titles after the Pioneers won the 2019 event. The 2020 Championship was not held due to COVID-19.
  • Denver has three of the top-five finishers from the 2021 #SummitGF Championship back to help the Pioneers defend their title. First Team All-League honoree Jackson Solem headlines that trio that also includes Second Team All-League honorees Carson Griggs and John Sand.
  • Solem placed second with a 213 (-3) total, while Sand took third (215; -1) and Griggs tied for fourth (218; +2).
  • North Dakota State’s Nate Deziel joins Solem as the only returning First Team All-Summit League honoree.
  • Griggs and Sand make up half of the Second Team All-League performers from a year ago that are back this season. Those two join Deziel’s Bison teammate Jack Johnson and South Dakota State’s Jack Tanner to fill out the returning quartet.
  • Solem and Griggs were one-two among Summit League golfers in stroke average during the fall. Solem held a 71.2 stroke average, while Griggs was at 71.7. Solem was named the #SummitGF Golfer of the Month for September, while Griggs earned the honor for October.
