SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha’s Mikhail Korkunov and North Dakota’s Sapir Sela claim this week’s TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week awards, league officials announced Tuesday.
Korkunov went 3-0 on the weekend to help Omaha extend its winning streak to five after beating Chicago State (6-1), UIC (7-0) and Nebraska (4-3). Against Chicago State, he earned a straight-set win over Jakub Zamorski at No. 5 singles.
In the 7-0 victory over UIC, he swept Ammar Wazir (6-1, 6-3) on the No. 5 singles court. He carried that momentum into the match against Nebraska where his 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Roni Hietaranta at No. 3 singles helped the Mavericks defeat the Huskers 4-3 in Lincoln, Neb.
Sela went a perfect 3-0 at the No. 1 position in singles play and 2-0 in doubles to help North Dakota to a 2-1 record on the weekend. In the 6-1 loss to UNLV, Sela picked up a 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Molly Helgesson to give UND its lone point. Helgesson had only suffered one loss on the No. 1 single court before meeting Sela.
In the Fighting Hawks’ 5-2 win over Dixie State, Sela teamed up with Andrea Jansson and took a 6-2 doubles victory on the No. 1 court. Sela then picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dixie State’s Alexandria Hildreth to help propel UND to a victory.
Sela closed out the weekend by helping pick up a doubles point with Jansson after defeating Montana State’s Olivia Oosterbaan and Ivayla Mitkova 6-3 on the top court. She then went on to clinch the match for the Fighting Hawks with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Grace Haugen on the No. 1 singles court.
