SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha’s Joey Machado and South Dakota State’s Ryan McDonald claimed the latest TicketSmarter #SummitBSB weekly awards after standout performances last week, league officials announced Monday.
Machado earned the third weekly pitching accolade of his career after picking up two wins in relief over in-state rivals last week. In his first outing, Machado allowed two hits and an unearned run in five innings of work to help defeat Creighton 5-3. He fanned four Bluejays to earn his first win of the season.
In his second appearance, the righthander logged four innings against Nebraska, limiting the Huskers to just one hit in what ended up as a walk-off 4-3 win for the Mavericks. For the week, Machado did not allow an earned run, surrendered just three hits and struck out six in nine innings of work.
McDonald broke out of a 2-for-27 slump to start the season with back-to-back three-hit games in two starts against Wichita State. In his first start of the series in game two, McDonald broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the seventh, a base knock that provided the game-winning runs in a 4-2 triumph for the Jackrabbits. He would finish 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles.
He earned the start behind the plate for the series finale, once again going 3-for-5 with two RBI. He belted his first home run of the season that tied the game at 3-3 in the third. McDonald also added a RBI-single in the first.
