SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Denver’s Matt Summers and South Dakota’s Jana Lazarevic took home this week’s TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, league officials announced Tuesday.
Summers helped guide the No. 55 Pioneers to a 1-1 weekend against nationally-ranked No. 66 Boise State (L, 4-3) and Loyola Marymount (W, 4-1). Lazarevic helped pace South Dakota to a 1-1 weekend in league play against No. 48 Denver (L, 5-2
0 and Kansas City (W, 4-3). Against the Pioneers, Lazarevic teamed up with Habiba Aly on the top court of doubles and was ahead 5-3 before having to go unfinished because of Pio wins on the other two courts. In singles action, she met Denver’s Britt Pursell on the No. 2 court and clinched one of USD two points with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In the victory over the Roos, Lazarevic and Aly teamed up again and dropped a tough doubles match, 6-4, on the top court. With the doubles point followed by a singles victory, the Roos took an early 2-0 lead. Teammate Aly secured a win to get the Coyotes on the board and Lazarevic evened the score 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win on the No. 2 courts.
