SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Drake’s Evan Fragistas and Kansas City’s Michela Xibilia collected this week’s TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week awards, league officials announced Tuesday.
Fragistas helped the Bulldogs to a 1-1 weekend against Samford (W, 4-3) and Alabama (L, 4-3). In the win over Samford, Fragistas teamed up with Matija Matic and gave the Bulldogs their only doubles victory defeating their opponents 6-3 on the No. 2 court. In singles action, he picked up his third straight win in singles play when he defeated Samford’s J.B. Pickard 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 4 court.
In the loss to Alabama, Fragistas and Matic earned their second straight win in doubles play after they defeated their opponents 7-6 (7-5) on the No. 2 court. Their victory helped the Bulldogs secure the doubles point. Fragistas carried the momentum into singles action and picked up his fourth straight win. On the No. 4 court, he matched up against Joao Ferreira and defeated him 7-5, 6-1.
Xibilia guided the Roos to a 1-1 weekend against Cincinnati (L, 6-1) and St. Thomas (W, 7-0). In the loss to Cincinnati, Zibilia teamed up with Ana Timofeyeva on the top court of doubles. The duo was tied 4-4 and went unfinished after Cincinnati clinched the doubles point. In singles, Xibilia was able to give the Roos their lone point after defeating Ioana Guna 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 2 court.
In the Roos’ first league victory of the season, Xibilia and Timofeyeva again teamed up on the top doubles court and defeated their opponents 6-1 to help give Kansas City the doubles point. In singles action, she secured her second-straight victory after defeating Jannah El Nemr 6-4, 6-1 on the No. 2 court.
