DU’s Herrero Cuesta, Pursell sweep TicketSmarter #SummitTEN weekly honors

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Denver Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and Britt Pursell swept the latest TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week awards, league officials released Tuesday. They both finished their weekend’s competition with perfect records.
 
Herrero Cuesta and the Pioneers finished the weekend 1-1 and their win came against No. 61 Gonzaga, 4-3. Against the Bulldogs, Herrero Cuesta teamed with Daniel Krulig and clinched the doubles point for the Pios, 7-6, win on the No. 3 court. In singles play, Herrero Cuesta won his match at the No. 1 spot in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Pursell won all six of her matches this weekend in No. 51 Denver’s wins over Weber State (7-0), St. Thomas (7-0) and Air Force. Against the Wildcats, Pursell teamed up with Camille Verden-Anderson to claim a 6-1 win on the No. 1 court in doubles. On the singles court, she claimed a victory for the Pioneers taking her third-court match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
 
Against the Tommies, the Oceanside, Calif., native she again teamed up with Verden-Anderson and improved to 7-3 in doubles with a 6-1 win on the top court. During her singles match on the No. 2 court, she earned the fourth and clinching point in straight sets at 6-2, 6-0.
 
In the Pioneers’ final match of the week against Air Force, Pursell once again teamed up with Verden-Anderson to earn the doubles with a 6-3 victory. In singles play, Pursell earned the 6-3, 6-2 singles win at the No. 3 spot.

  • Earned her fifth career athlete of the week honor and first this season
  • Went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles against Weber State, St. Thomas and Air Force
  • Now owns a 8-3 doubles record and 9-2 singles record on the season
