OMAHA, Neb. – In the first semifinal match of the 2022 Summit League Men’s Tennis Championship top-seeded Denver beat No. 4 Illinois State, 4-1 Friday evening at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. With the victory, the Pioneers will be making their third-consecutive appearance in the championship match.
The Pioneers opened the match with an early 1-0 after winning two doubles matches. Denver’s Charlie Miller and Daniel Krulig notched the first doubles win after besting Illinois State’s Nam Pham and Diego Le Gal Perez, 6-3.
The No. 90 nationally-ranked duo of Matt Summers and James Davis secured the doubles point beating ISU’s Zane Kohrs and Arvid Hjalte, 6-3.
In singles action, Hjalte got the Redbirds on the board (1-1) with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Krulig on the No. 5 court. Denver regained a 2-1 lead after Matt Summers beat Le Gal Perez (6-3, 7-5) on the No. 3 court.
The Pioneers picked up momentum from there and clinched the 4-1 victory. Peter Sallay extended the lead 3-1 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Diego Herrera on the No. 4 court. Nicolas Herrea Cuesta clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pol Botifoll Ruis at the No. 2 position.

No. 2 Drake advances to the championship match after outlasting No. 3 North Dakota 4-1 in the second semifinal match of the Summit League Men’s Tennis Championship Friday evening inside Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
Drake picked up some early momentum taking a 1-0 lead after winning two of the doubles matches. The Bulldogs’ Matija Matic and Reid Jarvis defeated North Dakota’s Riley Odell and Dylan Leeman 6-2 on the No. 3 court of doubles.
On the No. 2 court, Matt Clegg and Oliver Johansson secured the doubles point for the Bulldogs overcoming Edmond Aynedjian and Cian McDonnell, 6-4.
The Bulldogs capitalized on the momentum from doubles and pushed the lead 2-0 as Johansson beat McDonnell 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 4 court. Fellow Bulldog Jeremy Schifris pushed the lead 3-0 after he defeated Aynedjian 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
On the No. 6 court, Leeman put the Fighting Hawks on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Clegg but it wouldn’t be enough. Evan Fragistas clinched the 4-1 victory for the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nikita Snezhko at the No. 3 position.
