OMAHA, Neb. – The second-seeded Drake Bulldogs capture their third Summit League men’s title in the last five years Saturday afternoon after they defeated top-seeded No. 65 Denver in a tight 4-3 match inside Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
Drake took a 1-0 advantage after picking up two wins on the doubles courts. The Bulldogs’ duo of Jeremy Schifris and Evan Fragistas took the first doubles match after defeating Denver’s No. 90 nationally-ranked duo James Davis and Matt Summers 6-3 on the No. 1 court.
Oliver Johansson and Matt Clegg clinched the early lead after downing Charlie Miller and Daniel Krulig 6-4 on the No. 2 court.
Denver’s Davis gave the Pioneers their first point to tie it up 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Matija Matic on the top court.
Drake regained the lead (2-1) with Johansson's 6-2, 6-4 win over Peter Sallay on the No. 4 court and continued to capitalize on the momentum. Reid Jarvis pushed the lead 3-1 after he beat Krulig 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 5 court.
Miller answered and secured a point in favor of Denver (3-2) after he bested Clegg 6-2, 7-5 on the No. 6 court.
Herrea Cuesta tied it up 3-3 after he defeated Schifris 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 on the No. 2 court.
Fragistas sealed the deal for the Bulldogs after winning a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 match at the No. 3 spot to take the crown.
