NEWTON, Kan. -- Denver held off a final-day push by North Dakota State to capture its third consecutive #SummitGF Men's Championship at Sand Creek Station. The Pioneers posted an 850 (-14) total, edging the Bison (851; -13) by a stroke to mark the closest championship finish since the 2012 edition went into a team playoff.
Junor Nate Deziel became the first Bison to claim Championship MVP honors, finishing with a championship-record score of 203 (-13) to top the previous record of 205 set by IUPUI's Michael Davan in 2012. Deziel closed with a 70 (-2) to post his third consecutive round under par, but the team tally fell just shy of forcing a playoff.
Senior Carson Griggs was the top Pioneer in the final round and closed with a 68 (-4) to finish runner-up with a 208 (-8) total. He birdied No. 16 along wtih classmate Jackson Solem to help give DU, who entered the final round with a three-stroke lead, the victory and an automatic NCAA Regional bid as the Pios finished with an even-par score of 288 in the final round. Deziel also earned an automatic bid to play in the NCAA Regionals as an individual.
Solem placed fourth with a 213 (-3) total and joined Griggs on the all-tournament team for the second straight year. The DU duo of John Sand and Jun Ho Won gave the Pioneers are quartet of golfers under par as both shot 215 (-1) totals, to tie for sixth.
DU's 850 total was just one stroke shy of the all-time championship record of 849 held by Southern Utah and IUPUI at the 2012 Championship. The Pioneers' three consecutive titles are the most by a Summit League team since Western Illinois won that many from 2006-08. It is DU's fourth title overall, which moves them into a tie for third for the most titles in league history with former member Northern Illinois.
Oral Roberts (864; E) claimed third by a single stroke over South Dakota State (865; +1). The Jackrabbits pulled to within a stroke thanks to Jack Tanner and Liam Georgiadis, who both posted top-five finishes and landed on the all-tournament team.
Tanner shot a 211 (-5) over 54 holes and closed with a 70 (-2), while Georgiadis matched his teammate's final-round total and ended up with a 214 (-2).
Senior Dustin Hasley was ORU's top finisher, tying for sixth with Sand and Won with a 215 (-1) total as nine golfers finished under par at the championship.
