SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – North Dakota’s Cian McDonnell and Denver’s Andrea Burguete Beltran collected the TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s and Women’s Peak Performers of the Week honors, League officials announced on Tuesday.
McDonnell and the Fighting Hawks finished the weekend undefeated after beating Army (6-1), Rider (7-0) and Colgate (5-2) in West Point, N.Y. The Belfast, Northern Ireland native opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot against Army in singles play after going unfinished in doubles to make it a 3-0 contest.
After picking up a 6-1 doubles victory with Edmond Aynedjian against Rider, McDonell followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win to extend the lead to 2-0 in an eventual sweep. McDonnell closed out his weekend with a pair of clinching wins, sealing the doubles point by a 6-2 score before clinching the match with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Colgate. With the three wins last weekend, UND is off to a 5-0 start for the first time in program history.
Burguete Beltran went undefeated in singles play in her first matches of the season at the Long Beach State Winter Invitational. The Burriana, Spain native played on the No. 1 courts for all six matches (singles and doubles) and won two of three doubles matches with partner Britt Pursell. Against Pacific, Burguete Beltran and Pursell captured a 6-3 win in doubles action and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
The hosts Long Beach State welcomed Burguete Beltran and company and the Pioneers duo won 6-1 at the top doubles spot. Additionally, Burguete Beltran captured a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in singles action. After falling in doubles play against San Francisco, Burguete Beltran bounced back with a
7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
