TULSA, Okla. – In the first semifinal match of the 2023 Summit League Men’s Tennis Championship, top-seeded Denver beat No. 4 Omaha, 4-3, Friday morning at the Bernis Duke Tennis Center. With the victory, the Pioneers will be making their fourth-consecutive appearance in the championship match.
The Pioneers opened the match with an early 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches. Denver’s Peter Sallay and Anish Spriniketh notched the first doubles win after besting Omaha’s Davis Lawley and Quintan Van Wijk, 6-4.
The duo of Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and Conner Olsen secured the doubles point beating Omaha’s Hugo Piles Ballester and Alvaro Quintana, 7-6 (7-5).
In singles action, Herrero Cuesta got the Pioneers on the board (2-0) with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Davis Lawley on the No. 2 court. Omaha made it one point game (2-1) with a 6-3, 6-4 victory courtesy of Quintan Van Wijk against Denver’s Charlie Miller. Denver’s Daniel Sancho Arbizu extended the lead to 3-1 at the No. 3 spot thanks to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Omaha’s Mikhail Korkunov at the top position.
Omaha would earn the next two points thanks to Ryoma Mishiro (6-3, 6-3) and Ethan Gaubert (6-4, 6-4) wins setting up a decisive final point.
After Denver’s Peter Sallay picked up a 6-0 win in the first set at the No. 4 spot, Omaha’s Piles Ballester captured a 7-6 (7-5) win for a winner-take-all third set. Sallay would prevail with a convincing 6-2 win to move into the championship.

No. 2 Drake advances to the championship match after outlasting No. 3 North Dakota 4-1 in the second semifinal match of the Summit League Men’s Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Bernis Duke Tennis Center.
Drake picked up some early momentum taking a 1-0 lead after winning two of the doubles matches. The Bulldogs’ Jeremy Schifris and Evan Fragistas defeated North Dakota’s Riley Odell and Jerall Yasin, 6-0, on the No. 3 court of doubles.
On the No. 2 court, Oliver Johansson and Olle Sonesson Lidholt secured the doubles point for the Bulldogs overcoming Edmond Aynedjian and Cian McDonnell, 7-5.
The Bulldogs capitalized on the momentum from doubles and pushed the lead 2-0 as Johansson beat Aynedjian 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 4 court. Fellow Bulldog Jeremy Schifris pushed the lead to 3-0 after he defeated Gerhard Sullwald 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
On the No. 4 court, Evan Fragistas ended the match and secured the sweep against UND’s def. Nikita Snezhko with a 6-3, 6-4 final
