Second-seeded Bison stay alive with extra-innings win over Omaha

FARGO, N.D. – It took extra innings, but after building a 5-0 lead, second-seeded North Dakota State put away fourth-seeded Omaha 7-6 in the first elimination game of the 2023 #SummitBSB Championship at Newman Outdoor Field. Freshman righthander Parker Puetz delivered three scoreless extra-inning frames to give the Bison the 12-inning victory that extended their season at least one more game.
NDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run homer from Peter Brookshaw and RBI groundout from Jack Steil. The Bison extended that advantage to 4-0 when Davis Hamilton scored after Brookshaw grounded into a double play in the second.

The Mavericks had a chance to break through in the third off NDSU starter Tristen Roehrich when back-to-back hits from Mike Boeve and Haiden Hunt put two runners on, but Devin Hurdle's liner to centerfield was caught to end that threat.

Brookshaw was involved again in the fifth when he scored after stealing third and advancing home after a throwing error by Omaha catcher Eduardo Rosario to make it a 5-0 advantage for the tournament hosts.

Omaha did tally a run in the fifth off Roehrich when Zach Lechnir scored Matt Goetzmann on a sacrifice fly after he opened the inning with a double. Brookshaw provided that run back for NDSU in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly as he finished teh contest 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

Roehrich was pulled after six strong innings and the Mavericks promptly loaded the bases off reliever Joey Danielson with no one out in the seventh. The tall righthander was able to limit the damage to just one on a sacrifce fly by Hurdle. Danielson struck out Eddie Satisky, who homered twice in Wednesday's loss to Oral Roberts, with the bases loaded to end the frame and keep his squad ahead 6-2.

The Mavericks finally put a crooked number up on the board in the eighth compliments of a three-run shot by Eduardo Rosario off Bison closer Sklyer Reidinger. Rosario's blast made it a one-run contest going into the bottom of the ninth. Cam Frederick tied the game with a RBI single on a soft liner of NDSU second baseman Davis Hamilton.

Frederick then stole second and third, but Reidinger was able to force extra innings by striking out Rosario looking on three straight pitches.

Puetz only allowed a walk in his three innings of nearl flawless relief, while the Bison loaded the bases off Omaha righthander Alex Potter in their half of the 12th and were able to get the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly from Stephen Lund.

Puetz retired the side in order in the final inning to earn his third win of the season.
