#SummitVB Weekly Notebook: Championship edition

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The field is set for the 2024 Summit League Volleyball Championship as the six-team, single-elimination tournament will feature two quarterfinal matches on Sunday, Nov. 24, and two semifinal contests on Monday, Nov. 25 with the championship game being played on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. CT at the Swinney Center in Kansas City, Mo.

All six teams from last season's tournament return to battle it out in Kansas City.

All five matches of the postseason tournament will be televised on Midco Sports and streamed on the Summit League Network. The matches will be broadcasted by Jerod Fox  and Tanner Collins.

Around The League
• South Dakota State secured the program’s second regular season title by going 15-1 in Summit play to win the trophy outright. 
• The Jackrabbits’ one league loss was the fewest by a regular season champion since South Dakota went 16-0 to win the 2019 title.
• The No. 1 seed has only won the tournament title once since 2017 (South Dakota; 2022), but has hoisted the trophy 22 out of 32 times overall.
• South Dakota (2020) and Purdue Fort Wayne (2009) are the only No. 3 seeds to win the tournament - the other 30 champions were either the No. 1 (22x) or No. 2 (8x) seeds.
•The No. 2 seed has won four of the last six tournaments, including last season when Omaha captured the program’s first Division I postseason trophy.
• Since the field expanded to six teams in 2013, Omaha is the only non-No. 1 or No. 2 seed to advance to the title game. The Mavericks made the title game in 2015 as the No. 3 seed and 2019 as the No. 4 seed (No. 3 seed South Dakota won the title in 2020 when it was a four-team field due to Covid).
• The Jackrabbits closed out the outright title by beating the Coyotes in Vermillion for the first time since 2002. Sylvie Zgonc led the Jackrabbits with 14 kills, while Joslyn Richardson led the way with 15 digs.
• Omaha finished the regular season with a win over Kansas City to finish runner-up. The Mavericks got 18 kills from graduate senior McKenna Ruch and 17 from junior Kali Jurgensmeier. 
• Ruch is now tied for seventh all-time in career blocks in Summit League history with 455.
• South Dakota broke the attendance record for the Sanford Coyote Sports Center when 2,810 fans filled the stands for their match against South Dakota State.
• St. Thomas outside hitter Lauren Galvin surpassed 1,000 career kills as the Tommies set the program record for most wins in the Division I era by securing their 18th of the season against Oral Roberts. The Tommies closed the season on a four-match winning streak.
• North Dakota State graduate senior Ali Hinze recorded the 70th double-double of her career against in a four-set win over the Fighting Hawks. Hinze has left her mark on the Summit League record book and is now in possession of sixth place in career kills (1,747) and career total attacks (5,031).
• Denver led the Summit League in opponent digs with 11.90 digs per set.
• Kansas City’s Kaia Dunford etched her name in the Summit League record book by recording 4,146 attacks during her time as a Roo. She takes 11th place from Brynn Joki of North Dakota State and is five attacks away from surpassing her former teammate Odyssey Warren to jump to 10th place.
• North Dakota senior Jarolin de los Santos Lugo recorded a career high 14 kills at an attack clip of .385 during her final collegiate match against North Dakota State.
• Oral Roberts senior Trinity Freeman earned a spot in the Summit League record book after recording 3,903 career attacks. She beats out former ORU player Patricia Menezes for 19th place.
