Bison, Coyotes crowned #SummitITF champions

North Dakota State, South Dakota walk away with indoor League titles

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women brought home their 15th Summit League indoor championship trophy in the last 17 years while the South Dakota men earned back-to-back titles Saturday inside Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility.

Top Performers
North Dakota’s Yonca Kutluk became the first Fighting Hawk to walk away with the women’s Track Championship MVP award after totaling 30 points for UND. She opened up the championship with a gold medal in the 3,000m after clocking a time of 9:27.20.
 
Today, her second first-place finish came in the mile, after she crossed the finish line in 4:46.72. She closed out her triple crown performance with a time of 16:50.44 in the 5,000m for gold.
 
Teammate Kenna Curry also became the first Fighting Hawk to be crowned the women’s Field Championship MVP after she earned 18 points during the championship. During the first day of competition, she took the weight throw title with a toss of 69-02.00 (21.08m).
 
To close the championship today, she took silver in the shot put after registering a mark of 50-06.00 (15.39m).
 
North Dakota State’s Arienne Birch became the first Bison since 2013-14 to claim the women’s Newcomer of the Championship honor. She collected 10 points for the champions after winning the high jump with a clearance of 5-08.50 (1.74m).
 
For the first time since 2019-20, Oral Roberts earned the men’s Track Championship MVP honor. The Golden Eagle’s Abraham Chelangam earned the accolade after earning 30 points for ORU. During the opening day of the championships, he clocked an 8:17.50 in the 3000m to capture his first League title of the weekend.
 
Today, he capitalized on that momentum winning the mile in a time of 4:09.03 and then closed out his championship with a record-breaking performance in the 5,000m (14:07.76) for gold.
 
North Dakota State’s Zach McGlynn became the seventh Bison to take home the men’s Field Championship MVP honor. The NDSU junior earned the award with 21 total points. Yesterday, he took sixth in the men’s pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 16-07.50 (5.07m).
 
He then hit the long jump pit and came away with a silver medal after a personal-best leap of 24-02.50 (7.38m). Today, he closed out his indoor campaign with a high jump title after clearing a lifetime-best 7-00.25 (2.14m).
 
A Coyote took home the men’s Newcomer of the Championship for the first time since 2014-15 as Carsen Staehr claimed the award with 12 points. Yesterday, the freshman took fifth in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 23-06.75 (7.18m). Today he collected a silver medal in the triple jump with another personal-best leap of 48-10.75 (14.90m).
 
Other Notable Performances
South Dakota’s Meredith Clark defended her shot put title on her first throw of finals. She tossed a mark of 51-11.25 (15.83m) to take the gold.
 
Fellow Coyote Erin Kinney captured her second-consecutive 60m crown. She crossed the finish line in 7.31.
 
Oral Roberts’ Kevin Jackson collected his second career 60m title. He claimed victory clocking a personal-best time of 6.69.
 
Once again, North Dakota State’s Salmata Korgho and South Dakota State’s Brielle Dixon broke the 60m hurdles record. Korgho bested her record set yesterday, crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 8.28. Dixon followed with a personal-best time of 8.30.
 
USD’s Dylan Kautz secured the second 200m title of his career. He defended his 2023 title after crossing the finish line in 21.61.
 
Coyote senior Gen Hirata captured the second pole vault crown of her career, the last coming in 2020-21. She won the title with a clearance of 13-11.00 (4.24m). Hirata led the charge for the Coyotes in the women’s pole vault as USD took the top seven spots.
 
The top two teams for the women’s 4x400m relay crossed the finish line under the meet record (3:42.90). South Dakota captured its fourth consecutive 4x400m title in a time of 3:41.71. North Dakota State finished runner-up in 3:42.81.
 
The North Dakota State men closed out the day bringing home their second-straight 4x400m relay title. They captured gold with a time of 3:16.72.
