SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the second consecutive week, Omaha swept the TicketSmarter Summit League Baseball Peak Pitcher and Performer of the Week awards, League officials announced Monday. Maverick outfielder Matt Goetzmann collected the peak performer accolade, while reliever Luke Gainer earned the peak pitcher honor as both players were honored for the first time in their respective careers.
Goetzmann hit safely in all four of Omaha’s games to extend his hitting streak to 11 consecutive. He finished 8-for-14 (.571) during the 2-1-1 week for the Mavericks, who won their fifth consecutive series.
The Omaha native opened the week with a home run and a triple in a mid-week loss to Kansas State before going 6-for-10 (.600) with three runs and three RBI in a series win at North Dakota State.
Gainer inherited a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth of Omaha’s game-one victory over NDSU. He preserved a 7-6 win, striking out a pair of Bison to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The righthander would toss three scoreless innings in a game-three contest that would end in a 2-2 tie after eight innings due to a travel curfew. The Waukee, Iowa native punched out four Bison in his second scoreless outing of the series.
