TULSA, Okla. – South Dakota State outfielder Cael Frost was named the Summit League Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year Tuesday as League officials announced the 2024 All-League baseball teams and individual award winners.
Frost becomes the first Jackrabbit in program history to garner the League's top accolade, while Oral Roberts righthander Jakob Hall became the fourth straight Golden Eagle to collect the Pitcher of the Year honor.
In his first season in Brookings, Frost batted .321 in 28 Summit starts, mashing a League-leading 13 home runs and finishing second with 33 RBI. The Gilbertville, Iowa native also led the League with 35 runs and 82 total bases.
Hall posted an 8-1 record in 10 Summit starts, logging a 2.64 ERA while striking out 69 over 71.2 innings. He won his last five starts heading into the postseason.
Omaha picked up the remaining two individual awards as outfielder Matt Goetzmann was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Evan Porter was tabbed the Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure leading his alma mater.
Goetzmann patrolled center field for the Mavericks, making just one error in 64 chances for top-seeded Omaha. His defense helped Porter and company post a 16-13-1 overall record to finish second in the League standings.
Porter also won the award in 2019 when Omaha was also the No. 1 seed and went onto win the postseason tournament for the only time in program history.
Frost was one of a League-high five Jackrabbits to earn a spot on the first team as he was joined by second baseman Cade Stuff, designated hitter Dawson Parry, utility Jordan Sagedahl and starting pitcher Nic McCay, who is the only three-time, all-league recipient among the 2024 honorees.
McCay earned all-league honors in 2019 and 2022, but missed all of the 2023 season. He returned to go 4-2 and strikeout a League-high 79 in 59 innings of work in Summit play.
Hall and his ORU teammate, Drew Stahl, were the only repeat first-team honorees from the 2023 squad. Stahl made the first team a season ago as a designated hitter, but held down the first base spot in 2024 after batting .252 with five home runs.
Third baseman Holden Breeze moved up to the first team after taking second team honors a season ago to make a trio of Golden Eagles represented on the first team. Breeze led the Golden Eagles with a .356 batting average, six home runs and 29 RBI in League play.
Regular season champion St. Thomas had the two players land on the first team as catcher Max Moris and outfielder Brigs Richartz became the first Tommies in program history to earn that distinction. Moris started all 26 Summit games for the Tommies and batted .364 with four home runs and 23 RBI. Richartz chipped in with a .333 average and four home runs and 14 RBI.
Goetzmann was joined on the first team by Maverick hurler Harrison Kreiling, while NDSU also had two first-team honorees in shortstop Jake Schaffner and relief pitcher Joey Danielson.
On top of his stellar defense, Goetzmann produced a .314 batting average at the plate to go with three home runs and 22 RBI, while Kreiling went 3-1 in eight starts and posted a 3.15 ERA to go with 51 strikeout over 40 innings of work.
Schaffner batted .348 and was the lone freshman on the first team, while Danielson, with 11 saves, is one of just 14 Division I players with double-digit saves this season.
The Mavericks had the most representatives on the second team with five as third baseman Tyler Bishop, shortstop Henry Zipay, outfielder Drew Lechnir, designated hitter Noah Greise and relief pitcher Luke Gainer were all honored for the first time in their respective careers.
The Tommies had a quartet on the second with second baseman Tanner Recchio and utility Matthew Maulik joining starting pitchers Evan Esch and Jacob Mrosko on that unit.
South Dakota State and Oral Roberts each had two players on the second team, while NDSU had one. The Jackrabbits earning second-team nods were first baseman Luke Luskey and outfielder Reece Anderson, who garnered his second consecutive all-league honors.
ORU starter Brooks Fowler also earned his second straight all-league honor and was joined on the second team by Golden Eagle outfielder Kyle Booker. Bison catcher Will Busch wrapped up the second-team honorees.
NDSU landed five with honorable mention honors. That quintet includes outfielders Cadyn Schwabe and Sam Canton, designated hitter James Dunlap, utility Garret Hill and starting pitcher Logan Knight. Omaha and Northern Colorado, who is making the program's first postseason tournament appearance each had three garner honorable mention nods.
The three Mavericks were catcher Cardel Dick, first baseman Trent Burkhalter and second baseman Zach Lechnir. The trio of Bears honored were third baseman Kai Wagner, designated hitter Garrett Fisher and relief pitcher Murphy Gienger.
The St. Thomas duo of first baseman Joe Roder and shortstop Mikey Gottschalk and ORU outfielder Elijah Rodriguez rounded out the honorable mention honorees.
Four of the league's six teams will begin the 2024 Summit League Baseball Championship Wednesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The action starts 12 p.m. CT when top-seeded Omaha takes on fourth-seeded Northern Colorado. All games will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
