Omaha's Zipay named #SummitBSB Player of the Year

OMAHA, Neb.  – Omaha third baseman Henry Zipay was named the Summit League Player of the Year Tuesday as League officials announced the 2025 All-League baseball teams and individual award winners. Zipay is the second Maverick in the past four seasons to earn the League’s highest honor in voting conducted by the league’s six head coaches.

The Omaha native led all Summit League hitters with a .415 batting average against conference foes, hitting safely in 21 contests and finishing with 14 multi-hit games in his 26 starts. His 10 doubles were second most among Summit hitters.

North Dakota State lefthander Nolan Johnson was tabbed the Pitcher of the Year, while Bison shortstop Jake Schaffner garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Johnson became the first hurler in NDSU history to capture the highest pitching honor after finishing 4-2 with a 3.34 ERA in nine Summit starts. He fanned 55 batters in 56.2 innings of conference work and limited opponents to a .242 batting average.

Schaffner secured the top defensive honor after committing just two errors in 102 chances in the middle of the diamond. He posted a .980 fielding percentage against league foes and was part of 10 double plays.

Oral Roberts joined NDSU in earning a pair of individual honors as righthander Easton Teel was named the Newcomer of the Year and Ryan Folmar garnered Coach of the Year honors for the seventh time in his career.

Folmar led ORU to a share of the regular season title after the Golden Eagles won nine of their last 10 Summit games. He now stands two wins shy of becoming the winningest coach in Summit League history. Former Valparaiso head coach Paul Twenge currently leads the way with 378 victories.

Teel went 6-2 and led all Summit pitchers with a 2.98 ERA against conference competition. The freshman posted seven quality starts in Summit play and struck out 43 in a league-high 63.1 innings.

Teel was one of a league-high four Golden Eagles to be named to the All-Summit League first team. He was joined on that squad by second baseman Jack Schark, outfielder Will Edmunson and catcher Wailele Kane-Yates. Those three Golden Eagle newcomers combined for 20 home runs in Summit play with Kane-Yates pacing all league batters with nine long balls against conference foes. Edmunson added six, while Schark had five.

Johnson and Schaffner were joined on the first team by Bison freshman Danny Lachenmayer, who topped all Summit relief pitchers with six saves in conference action, on the first team. Schaffner, who was the only repeat honoree on the 14-member first team, also turned in a solid season at the plate for NDSU, hitting .408 in Summit games.

Zipay, first baseman Tyler Bishop and outfielder Jackson Trout gave the Mavericks a trio of first team selections. For Zipay and Bishop, the all-league distinction is the second of their respective careers after both were second-team selections in 2024. Bishop hit .361 and was second among Summit hitters with 34 RBI in conference play.

Co-regular season champion St. Thomas had a pair of all-league first team selections for the second straight year with utility player Matthew Maulik and starting pitcher Marcus Kruzan earning that distinction this season.

Maulik hit .297 with six home runs and 24 RBI in league play, while Kruzan paced all league hurlers with seven victories in Summit play, while posting a 3.71 ERA.

The South Dakota State duo of outfielder Owen Siegert and designated hitter Bryce Ronken rounded out the first team. Siegert hit .324 in league play with three home runs and 21 RBI, while Ronken posted a .402 clip and added nine doubles, two homers and 26 RBI.

The Tommies had the most representatives on the second team with five as second baseman Tanner Recchio landed on that squad for the second straight season. Designated Brigs Richartz also earned his second straight all-league nod and those two were joined by outfielder Joe Vos, starting pitcher Riane Ritter and relief pitcher Zak Endres.

The Jackrabbits were next with four all-league second team selections. First baseman Luke Luskey was a repeat honoree and was joined on the team by third baseman Nolan Grawe, shortstop Carter Sintek and utility player Adam Benes.

Northern Colorado and NDSU each had two selections as the Bears were represented by catcher Craig Kinnery and outfield Jake King, while the Bison were represented by outfielder Dante Smith and starting pitcher Logan Knight.

Omaha starting pitcher Ben Weber rounded out the second-team selections.

The 14-player honorable mention list included St. Thomas catcher Max Moris, Tommie first baseman Joe Roder, who led all Summit players with 35 RBI in conference play, Northern Colorado third baseman Kai Wagner, North Dakota State third baseman Davis Hamilton, ORU outfielder Cooper Combs, NDSU outfielder Sam Canton, Omaha outfielder Tyler Palmer, ORU designated hitter Owen Coil, Northern Colorado starting pitcher Murphy Geinger, ORU starting pitcher Nathan Love, Omaha  starting pitcher Tanner Foertsch, ORU relief pitcher Dalton Patten and SDSU relief pitcher Jake Goble.

Four of the league's six teams will begin the 2025 Summit League Baseball Championship Wednesday at Tal Anderson in Omaha. The action starts 12 p.m. CT when top-seeded Oral Roberts takes on fourth-seeded South Dakota State. All games will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
