USCAH, Summit League expand partnership to include NCAA-required health and safety education

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (USCAH) and The Summit League are pleased to announce an expansion of their ongoing partnership to include NCAA-required health and safety education for all member institutions. This addition enhances an already comprehensive suite of services aimed at strengthening student-athlete health, safety, and compliance across the conference.

As part of this new initiative, Summit League institutions will gain access to “Preparing for Catastrophic Injury in Sport,” a course delivered through USCAH’s Athletics Healthspace platform. This module satisfies the NCAA’s requirement for annual health and safety education for all institutional stakeholders.

“This expansion underscores our shared commitment to advancing student-athlete well-being and ensuring institutional alignment with NCAA standards,” said James Borchers, MD, MPH, President and Co-Founder of USCAH. “We’re proud to continue supporting The Summit League with tools and education that promote safe, high-quality athletic healthcare environments.”

With this expansion, The Summit League joins peer conferences such as the Big Ten, Sun Belt, Big West, and others that have adopted comprehensive partnerships with USCAH in preparation for the NCAA Division I health and safety attestation. This collective approach reflects a growing national movement to elevate health and safety infrastructure across all levels of intercollegiate athletics.

This new component builds on the services already provided through the partnership, including:
  • Annual Online Assessment
A third-party, structured review of athletic healthcare delivery, personnel, and programming, completed annually to ensure institutions meet national standards and best practices.
  • USCAH Comprehensive Assessment
A detailed, in-person or virtual evaluation conducted once every four years, assessing healthcare delivery systems, support services, and institutional alignment with peer benchmarks.
  • Athletic Healthcare Administrator Association (AHAA)
A professional development platform offering educational resources, topic updates, and a minimum of 20 Category A CEUs annually for certified athletic trainers.
“This partnership extension reflects our continued commitment to equipping our institutions with nationally recognized tools that enhance student-athlete care,” said Josh Fenton, Commissioner of The Summit League. “By integrating the NCAA-required education into our conference-wide programming, we not only ensure our institutions remain proactive, prepared, and aligned with best practices in athletics health and safety, but also provide vital support to the athletic healthcare providers who serve our student-athletes every day.”

Implementation of the NCAA-required education module is already underway. USCAH is working directly with member institutions to coordinate course access and support compliance tracking. Additionally, institutions are encouraged to enroll their athletic healthcare staff in the AHAA platform to take advantage of CEU opportunities and professional development resources.
