MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois Athletics along with The Summit League is saddened to share the passing of Dr. Helen Smiley, former Director of Athletics, who died on Friday, July 11, in Davenport, Iowa.
A respected leader and pioneer in collegiate sports, Dr. Smiley guided Leatherneck Athletics from 1994 to 2001, leaving a legacy of excellence and inclusion. She originally joined WIU in 1985 and held multiple key roles before becoming the university's first woman to lead the entire athletics department.
Dr. Smiley's career extended far beyond Macomb, with leadership roles at the University of Iowa and the University of North Dakota. Her work earned national recognition, including being named NACDA Athletic Director of the Year in 2000 and having the Summit League Women's All-Sports Award named in her honor.
She was inducted into the WIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and The Summit League Hall of Fame in 2018.
"Dr. Smiley's influence shaped generations of athletes and administrators," said WIU Athletics Director Paul A. Bubb. "Her legacy is deeply felt throughout Leatherneck Nation."
In keeping with her wishes, services will be private for family and friends.
