No. 3 South Dakota sweeps No. 6 Kansas City for trip to semifinal

Third-seeded Coyotes advance to semifinals after 3-0 sweep over sixth-seeded Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Third-seeded South Dakota swept No. 6 seed and tournament host Kansas City (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) during the second quarterfinal match of the 2024 Summit League Volleyball Championship Sunday inside the Swinney Center. The Coyotes were just the third team in tournament history to hit better than .400 as a team as they secured their 11th semifinal appearance in the past 12 tournaments.
 
Who Stood Out
South Dakota’s Kylen Sealock led all players with 12 total kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Lauren Medeck followed with 10 kills, a .476 clip and seven digs. Defensive Player of the Year Kamryn Farris led the defensive end with a match-high 21 digs to go along with three service aces. Avery Van Hook dished out a match-best 35 assists in the victory.
 
For the Roos, Kaia Dunford led the charge with 11 total kills and hit .200 percent. Sydney Henry totaled 25 assists and a team-best nine digs in the loss.
 
Turning Point
South Dakota came out swinging from the start and put up a 6-0 lead to start the match. Kansas City got on the board after a service error by USD’s Lauren Medeck to make the score 6-1 but that was as close as KC would come to the Coyotes. South Dakota went on to win the first set 25-11 and carried that momentum into the sweep.
 
Notable
  • The Coyotes will be returning to the semifinals after missing last year’s because of a 3-2 quarterfinal loss to North Dakota State.
  • South Dakota has made an appearance in the semifinals of the Summit League Volleyball Championship in 11 of the last 12 years.
  • USD’s .426 hitting percentage (45-5-94) is the second-best hitting percentage in Summit League Volleyball Championship history.
  • Van Hooks’ 35 assists had her eclipsing the 2,000 career assists threshold.
  • South Dakota beat Kansas City in both meetings during the regular season claiming the series sweep with 3-1 wins both times.
