SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Summit League women’s basketball programs wrap up the calendar year and nonconference slate over the next two weeks, with every team still having at least one game remaining before the New Year's Eve league opener between Omaha and Kansas City.
The next two weeks are highlighted by South Dakota State hosting one of the nation’s best on Sunday, Dec. 21, as the Jackrabbits welcome No. 2 Texas to Brookings for a 1 p.m. CT tip. The contest will be televised on CBS Sports Network (CBSSN).
The closing stretch of the nonconference slate opens today at 4 p.m. CT with North Dakota State at UTRGV.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
• The Jackrabbits battled through an extended scoring drought and erased a nine-point halftime deficit to edge Northern Iowa 59-57 on the road Wednesday, then returned home to roll past Ball State 78-59 on Sunday in Brookings.
• South Dakota State’s win streak is up to five.
• For the first time this season, junior Maggie Hartwig paced SDSU in scoring against the Panthers, posting a season-high 16 points while adding seven rebounds.
• Preseason Player of the Year Brooklyn Meyer added 14 points against UNI and a game-high 20 versus Ball State, while SDSU’s second-leading scorer, Madison Mathiowetz, chipped in 10 and 14 points, respectively.
• After opening the season 2-2, North Dakota State extended its win streak to a league-best seven with an 82-80 overtime road win at Pepperdine.
• The 9-2 start is NDSU’s best through the first 11 games since the 2020-21 season.
• NDSU forward Avery Koenen posted her fifth straight double-double with a season-best 29 points and game-high 12 boards against the Waves.
• For the first time this season, South Dakota suffered back-to-back losses after a 65-62 setback at Bradley in its lone contest of the week, dropping to 8-3 overall.
• The Yotes had three players that scored in double-figures and were led by Tori Schlagel with 14 points.
• USD nearly erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit despite standout Angelina Robles being held under double figures for the first time since the season opener.
• After opening the season 1-6, the Tommies pushed their win streak to five with a 112-23 rout of Crown followed by a 70-50 win over Drake.
• The 112-point outburst marked St. Thomas’ first 100-point game since the 2015-16 season -- the Tommies also set DI-era program records with 14 steals in a quarter and 37 points in a quarter.
• Oral Roberts’ three-game win streak ended Tuesday afternoon with a 79-65 road loss at Wichita State.
• Sophomore guard Anna Trusty poured in a team-high 23 points, with Jalei Oglesby contributing 15 in the setback.
• The Golden Eagles forced 18 turnovers and pulled down 13 offensive boards, with Oglesby accounting for three.
• Denver dropped a 77-38 decision at Kansas in the Summit League’s lone Power 4 matchup of the week.
• Freshman Tori Baker led the Pioneers with 10 points, while Coryn Watts, the league’s second-leading scorer at 19.0 ppg, was held to a season-low eight.
• In a 64-58 home loss to Utah Valley, Kansas City junior Emani Bennett poured in a game-high 27 points with six boards on 48 percent shooting.
• The Roos remain a threat from beyond the arc, ranking fourth nationally in three-point percentage (40.3).
• North Dakota freshman Lauren Hillsheim scored a career-high eight points in the 80-50 loss against Western Kentucky.
• The Fighting Hawks lost the rebound battle 38-36 in the matchup and have now fallen to 0-5 in games where they are outrebounded.
• Omaha’s lone game of the week ended in a 90-41 loss at Western Illinois, stretching the team’s losing streak to nine games.
• Sarai Estupiñan and Avril Smith have stood out for the Mavericks, with Estupiñan averaging 15.0 ppg (eighth in the league) and Smith leading the league with 10.1 rpg.
