Fayetteville, Ark. – Kansas City’s Tory Lanham, North Dakota State's Ethan Moe and South Dakota's Jaden Damiano advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals at the NCAA West Regional on Wednesday to headline the opening day of competition amongst Summit League athletes.
Kansas City
Tory Lanham claimed one of the top three automatic spots in his heat by sprinting a 20.58 in the 200-meter dash. The Roo junior ranks sixth heading into the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:50 PM.
North Dakota
Shane Zierden represented North Dakota track and field in the opening day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Wednesday afternoon before narrowly missing on a bid for a championship ticket.
In the lone event for the Fighting Hawks, Zierden took on the long jump as the No. 29 seed in the event. His first jump proved to be the day's highlight for the sophomore with a mark of 24-8 1/2 (7.53m). It was the highest-placing mark for athletes in the second heat but ended up not being enough against four full flights of athletes.
Zierden finished 16
th overall in the event, finishing just shy of a bid to the national championship meet in Eugene, Oregon while improving 13 spots from his original No. 29 ranking. It also marked the highest finish by a UND athlete in the long jump at the NCAA West Prelims in program history.
North Dakota State
North Dakota State's Ethan Moe advanced to the national quarterfinals in the 1500 meters to headline the performances of the Bison men's track & field team on the opening day of the NCAA West First Rounds.
Moe ran 3:41.02 to take fifth in his 1500m heat and automatically advance to Friday among the top 24 runners. Moe's time was the second-fastest 1500m in NDSU history, behind only his own school record of 3:40.74 set in April of this season.
Moe will race at 5:15 p.m. CT on Friday, with the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Bison senior Kaden Pastian threw 59-08.50 (18.20m) in the shot put to place 21st. He also finished 32nd in the hammer throw with a mark of 198-6 (60.51m), out-performing his No. 45 pre-meet ranking by 13 places.
Freshman Joshua Kyei-Baffour placed 28th in his 110m hurdles debut at the NCAA West First Rounds, clocking 13.93.
Sophomore Kaleb Foltz finished 38th in the 800m, running 1:49.77.
A pair of Bison competed in the javelin, which was delayed until Wednesday night. Sophomore Zach Lilly threw 194-6 (59.29m), and freshman Ryder Bickett threw 181-8 (55.39m).
The men's pole vault competition – featuring NDSU's Aaron Cummings and Zach McGlynn – was postponed to 2:40 p.m. on Thursday.
South Dakota
For the Coyotes who had a chance to compete Wednesday afternoon in Fayetteville, it was a successful day with one Coyote advancing to the quarterfinals and one Coyote placing inside the top 20 in the region.
Only three of the originally scheduled eight South Dakota men's track and field athletes were able to compete on Wednesday afternoon as afternoon into early evening storms created schedule changes and delays.
While Jaden Damiano and Mikael Grace were able to get their 110-meter hurdle races in and Brandon Vander Sluis was able to compete in the men's shot put, the five men's pole vaulters who were scheduled for an 8 p.m. start were not able to compete due to the weather. The men's pole vault competition is now scheduled to begin at 2:40 p.m. Thursday before the women's pole vault competition. Caelan Harland, Beau Karst, Wyatt Stewart, Dylan Curtis, and Dutch Neuweiler will all look to punch a ticket to Eugene in that men's pole vault.
On the track, Damiano was able to punch his ticket into the 110-meter hurdle quarterfinals in the West Region for a second consecutive season. He was one of the three automatic qualifiers from the first heat with a personal best time of 13.59. He is now tied with sprint and hurdle coach Teivaskie Lewin for third in the event in school history. Grace ran a strong race in heat two, placing fourth in the heat with a time of 13.94, but was not able to be in the top 24 to advance to Friday's next round, placing 30
th.
Damiano missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championships last season by placing 17
th in the quarterfinals with the top 12 going to Eugene. His first round time was good enough for 13
th overall on Wednesday, .02 seconds behind the 12
th best time. He will look to crack the top 12 and punch his ticket to the National Championships at 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 110-meter hurdle quarterfinals.
The lone field competitor for the Yotes on Wednesday was Vander Sluis in the shot put. Competing at his first NCAA West Regional, Vander Sluis came up one inch short of advancing to Eugene, placing 14
th with a mark of 61-3 (18.67m). the final qualifying throw was marked at 61-4 (18.69m). In his first full collegiate throwing season since 2022-23, Vander Sluis earned a Summit League title and a trip to the NCAA West Regional. He was the top Summit League finisher in the shot put field Wednesday.
South Dakota State
South Dakota State's Brandon Kampsen competed in the preliminary heats of the 800-meter Wednesday at the NCAA West Regional.
Kampsen posted a time of 1:50.84., placing 46
