Pioneers, Roos sweep 2024 #SummitMSOC Awards

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Regular season champion Denver and runner-up Kansas City combined to claim all six 2024 Summit League men’s soccer award winners that were announced along with the all-league and all-newcomer teams Friday by League officials.

Sam Bassett, Isaac Nehme, and Ronan Wynne each won individual honors for the second time in their respective Pioneer careers. Bassett secured his second consecutive Midfielder of the Year nod, while Nehme matched that feat with another Goalkeeper of the Year nod.

Wynne, who missed all of last season, claimed his second Defensive Player of the Year award in his return to the pitch in 2024. He also won the award as a junior in 2022.

Kansas City’s Elie Kisoka earned both Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades after a strong first season as a Roo. Ryan Pore was named the Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. The Roos, who were picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll, took second and dealt DU its only league loss of the season as Pore’s squad finished with 16 points and a 5-2-1 ledger.

Bassett, who shared the league-lead with five assists and added two goals, spearheaded a DU offense that poured in a league-best 19 goals in eight Summit matches. He was tied for third in points with nine.

Nehme and Wynne, who helped DU register a league-best four shutouts in league play, guided the Pioneers to the program’s 10th regular season title and a second straight seven-win season in league play. Nehme led all league goalkeepers with a 0.65 goals against average as the defense only yielded five goals in eight Summit tilts.

Kisoka finished second in Summit play with four goals, including three game-winners. He also added an assist as the Roos’ offense put up 14 total goals against league foes and recorded the program’s highest finish in league play since 2012.

Bassett, Nehme and Pio teammate Ian Smith along with Oral Roberts’ Luis Flores and Kansas City’s Julien Le Bourdoulous were all repeat selections on the All-Summit League First Team, while Wynne and Ben Smith, who was the 2022 Midfielder of the Year, returned to the first team for the second time in their careers.

Flores led all Summit players with 11 points against league foes this season after earning Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors in 2023. Le Bourdoulous racked up his second straight honor after guiding the Roos to 11 overall wins, which is one shy of equaling the program record.

Denver, who is ranked No.4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 2 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll entering the postseason, led the way with six overall first-team selections as forward Oje Ofunrein joined the quintet of repeat Pio honorees.

Flores was joined by Golden Eagle teammate Schinidier Mimy, who was a second team selection in 2023. Le Bourdoulous was joined by Kisoka and defender Fernando Somolinos Bravo.

Omaha placed a league-best five members on the All-Summit Second Team. Theo Klein and Nathanael Sallah were repeat all-league honorees and joined on the squad by Maverick forward Italo Jenkins, midfielder Thore Boehm and defender Naz Astwood.

Denver and ORU each had a pair of players on the second team with the Pioneers landing forward Bryce Willoughby and defender Trevor Wright on the squad. Forward Omar Mora and defender Baptiste Boit made up the Golden Eagle duo on the second team.

Kansas City midfielder Raphael Kistmann and St. Thomas forward Faris Colic rounded out the squad. Colic is the first Tommie to earn an all-league award since UST joined the league prior to the 2021 season.

The Roos racked up seven all-newcomer selections led by all-league honorees Kisoka, Kistmann, and Somolinos Bravo. Those three were joined by Kansas City forward Jeremy Francou, midfielder Mathias Baucher, defender Wesley Cribb and goalkeeper Brandon McGaugh on the squad.

ORU’s Mora also earned a nod on the all-newcomer team along with a trio of Mavericks. Jenkins was joined by UNO teammates Elie Bokota and Sahai Williams.

The Roos and Golden Eagles accounted for all 11 players that earned honorable mention honors. Kansas City had seven earn those honors, while ORU had four.

The 2024 Summit League Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 16 in the Mile High City as the top-seeded Pioneers will host the second-seeded Roos in the title match at 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT on the Summit League Network.
